Antimicrobial Technology – What is the AntiMicrobial Agent ?

The antimicrobial agent is an optimal blend of naturally existing silver and copper that are organic, yet very powerful. For centuries, silver has been used in purification and medicinal purposes. Today, the same antimicrobial agents have been used safely in medical and industrial applications from catheters, to ice machines, to food packaging.

Thorough testing has shown the silver-copper antimicrobial compounds to be nontoxic and effective, making the agents perfectly suited for antimicrobial respirator masks. These same antimicrobial agents are National Science Foundation (NSF) and U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA) listed and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered. They are also listed with the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association as a cosmetic preservative and have the standard approval in Europe under the Biocidal Products Directive.




How does the AntiMicrobial Agent Work ? 

The cornerstone to the technology is silver (Ag), a naturally occurring, safe, and effective antimicrobial agent in its ionic form. The delivery system is a zeolite carrier that allows a controlled and effective release of the silver ions, on demand, thus killing and inhibiting the growth of bacteria, viruses, mold and fungus over long periods of time. This stable ion exchange process is non-reactive and allows the compound to be used in virtually every imaginable manufacturing process.

Silver and copper active elements are released at a steady rate as they interact with humidity in the environment, producing an antibacterial/antifungal/antiviral surface. The moisture in the environment causes a controlled release of the copper and silver through a proprietary ionic exchange.


The silver-copper zeolite antimicrobial agent is embedded throughout the fabric of the mask. As humidity in the environment naturally interacts with the silver-copper zeolites, an ion is omitted which interacts with the cells of microorganism and interrupts its ability to function or reproduce. This safe and nontoxic release of the ions are continuous and remain active over long periods of time.


In many applications, the antimicrobial compound has been shown to provide antimicrobial efficacy in just a few minutes while maintaining optimal killing and inhibitory performance for months.

Silver is highly reactive and works as an antimicrobial in numerous ways. Silver ions carries a strong positive charge creating a strong attraction for negatively charged ions. 

By combining both silver and copper, we provide enhanced and faster permanently embedded antimicrobial action.  Fosshield fiber is patented and is the first and only antimicrobial technology to successfully use a balance of silver and copper ions in a fiber therefore killing bacteria like MRSA and inactivating viruses including NoroVirus.

The binding reaction alters the molecular structure.  It creates the macromolecule to be worthless to the cell.  The binding reaction on multiple sites within a cell will simultaneously inactivate numerous functions:

Bacteria are inhibited from growth and/or dies.  A virus is technically not a microbe because it is not alive; however it is generally accepted as a class of microbes which are inactivated.

Ultraviolet-C Lights

For over a century scientists have known of the germ-killing power of ultraviolet light.  In 1903, Dr. Niels Finsen won the Nobel Prize for the treatment of tuberculosis.  The technology has been used to control pathogens, from disinfecting water to controlling airborne diseases in hospitals.

The light we can see is just a portion of the light spectrum.  Ultraviolet light is invisible but has a higher frequency than visible light.  The frequency of UV light is between 90 – 400 NM.  The effective range for disinfection is UV-C (200 – 280nm with peak germicidal effectives at 254 nm).

Exposure to UV light has a devastating effect on microorganisms.  The very short wavelength of UV-C light penetrates the membrane and nucleus of micro-organisms and breaks apart the molecular bonds of DNA.  This inhibits the organism’s ability to reproduce, effectively killing it.  The amount of UV exposure needed to accomplish this varies from microbe to microbe.  Spore, and some environmental bacteria tend to be more resistant and can survive relatively longer exposure than most viruses and other organic contaminates which cause odor.

UV light systems are currently the best technology available to provide ongoing microbial growth control on air-conditioning coils.  A well-known study by the medical journal Lancet in 2003 showed that UV lights reduced microbial contamination within the HVAC system by greater than 99% and reduced occupant respiratory illnesses by more than 40%.
